Julia Peyton-Jones, former director of the Serpentine Galleries for 25 years, has been appointed Senior Global Director of Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, which opened a branch in London earlier this year. According to the gallery Peyton-Jones will ‘take on ambassadorial and curatorial role’ from September 2017.
Peyton-Jones was appointed director of the Serpentine Gallery in 1991, and was central to developing the gallery’s public and fundraising profile through the 1990s and 2000s. From 2006 she was joined by supercurator Hans Ulrich Obrist as co-director, and oversaw the expansion of the gallery to a second nearby building, the Serpentine Sackler. She stepped down in October 2015.
Peyton-Jones will focus on the creative development of the gallery, working with the gallery’s international roster of artists and artist estates, alongside Thaddaeus Ropac and his team across the gallery‘s four locations in London, Paris, Paris Pantin and Salzburg.
Commenting on the appointment, Thaddaeus Ropac said: “Julia Peyton-Jones is one of the most respected and admired figures in the art world with an unparalleled level of experience. It will be an honour and a joy to work together and develop exciting new projects.”
