This year’s Konrad Wolf Prize was awarded posthumously to German artist, actor, and film and theatre director Christoph Schlingensief (1960–2010) for his Opera Village project, set up in 2010 in Burkina Faso. Conceived in collaboration with architect and development activist Diébédo Francis Kéré, the village aimed at providing a creative platform for cultural encounters, workshops and exchange.
The totality of the prize money will be donated to the village, ‘specifically to the planned support for young people to acquire a knowledge of film as a means of expression’. Awarded annually by the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the prize pays tribute to political filmmaker Konrad Wolf by rewarding and supporting the work of filmmakers such as Lars von Trier, Agnes Varda, Avi Mograbi and Ken Loach.
