Michelle Kuo, the former editor-in-chief of Artforum, who stood down in the wake of the sexual harassment allegations against the magazine’s copublisher Knight Landesman, has been appointed curator of painting and sculptor at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Of the appointment, which will see Kuo both organise shows and contribute to the museum’s acquisitions programme, Ann Temkin, the chief curator of painting and sculpture at the institution, said, ‘Moving from the space of a magazine to that of a museum, her outstanding record as an editor, writer, and scholar will serve her well as she joins us in developing the collection and organizing exhibitions in both the historical and contemporary fields.’
Kuo co-curated Le Corbusier and the Synthesis of the Arts at Harvard University’s Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts in 2004, and served as advisor to Experiments in Art and Technology at Salzburg Museum of Modern Art in 2015. Kuo was at Artforum for seven years from 2010. She resigned after the Landesman story broke last October, feeling she ‘could no longer serve as a public representative of Artforum.’ Kuo added at the time, ‘We need to make the art world a more equitable, just, and safe place for women at all levels.’ David Velasco replaced her as editor-in-chief at the magazine.
