The organising committee for Yokohama Triennale has announced that Raqs Media Collective will take up the role of artistic directors for the 2020 edition. The New Delhi-based collective consisting of Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta was chosen for its ‘highly intellectual and polemical approach’ to curating shows which have recently included the 2016 Shanghai Biennale and this year’s In the Open or in Stealth at Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona. Yokohama, after nearly 200 years of Japan’s isolationist policy, became one of the first ports in the country to open to international trade in the 19th century, and has since practised a culture of being ‘open to untested ideas and unfamiliar knowledge’ as well as addressing current geopolitical issues. As directors of the 2020 triennale Raqs Media Collective intend to find ‘polyglot anchors that translate and poetically amplify’ the triennale’s concerns.
