Sheela Gowda has been announced as the winner of the Maria Lassnig Prize 2019, awarded biennially by the Maria Lassnig Foundation and the Lenbachhaus Munich to a midcareer artist. She will receive €50,000 and an extensive solo exhibition at Lenbacchaus in March 2020.
Gowda (b. 1957) studied in London and Bangalore, where she now lives and work. She has exhibited widely at international events including the Kochi Muziris Biennale (2012), the Venice Biennale (2009), Documenta 12 and the Biennale de Lyon (both 2007). Recent solo shows have been held at Ikon, Birmingham (2017), Perez Art Museum, Miami, and Para Site, Hong Kong (both 2015).
The Maria Lassnig Prize was founded by the pioneering Austrian artist before her death in 2014, age 94. Having reached recognition as an artist only late in her life, she hoped to provide a decisive step for midcareer artists.
