The Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia, has announced that curator Philipp Kaiser has invited artist duo Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler and sculptor Carol Bove to show at in the Swiss Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. Titled Women of Venice, the show will reflect on the history of the pavilion, nodding in particular to Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti, who, despite numerous invitations to represent his country, always politely declined. Presumably considering himself more international than Swiss, he eventually showed his work at the Biennale in 1956, in an exhibition at the French Pavilion, which gave its title to this year’s Swiss pavilion.
Bove will create a new group of sculptures, referring to the late figurative work of the artist, while artists Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler will present a new film installation, Flora, based on the history of American artist Flora Mayo who studied in Paris in the 1920s and was Giacometti’s lover.
