Bharti Kher receives French award of 'Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'

London-born, New Dehli-based artist Bharti Kher has been awarded the highest French cultural award, Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) for her contribution to the landscape of contemporary art, both in France and internationally. The award ceremony took place on 23 March.

Established in 1957, l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is aimed at the recognition of artists and writers who have made significant contributions to the fields of art, culture and literature, and contains three grades, starting from Knight, to Officer and then Commander.

Other members of the Order include art historians and writers such as Jan Hoet and Yve-Alain Bois, as well as artists such as Ernesto NetoNancy Holt, and Kher’s husband and artist Subodh Gupta who joined in 2013.
