Ai Weiwei and Joan Baez are to be the joint recipients of Amnesty International’s Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2015. Given every year by the NGO, the prize recognises and celebrates figures who have shown strong leadership in the fight for human rights, through their life and work.
Both known for their activism, Baez and Ai Weiwei have been selected for the former’s involvement in the American civil rights movement, Amnesty International (since the early 1970s), and work campaigning against the Vietnam War, and for the latter’s dissident criticism and political activism for democratic and human rights in China that cost him 81 days in solitary imprisonment in 2011.
The Award will be presented at a ceremony in Berlin on 21 May 2015.
31 March 2015.
