The US French Embassy in Washington has awarded minimalist artist Carle Andre and his gallerist Paula Cooper the Order of Arts and Letters, the highest official distinction for contributions to French arts and culture, Artnews reports. André was named commandeur, while Cooper, who had previously been named a chevalier in 2002, was promoted to officier. The two have been working together since the very beginning of Cooper’s gallery, whose first group show in 1968 included Andre’s work. Although Cooper didn’t represent the artist until a decade later, their partnership has endured to the present day and his work is currently included in the group show The Xerox Box at the gallery. Andre was also recently the subject of a retrospective at the Dia Art Foundation, which will be travelling to Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof Museum ((7 May – 25 September 2016) and to the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris (October 2016 – February 2017).
