Venezuelan artist Marisol Escobar has died aged 85, Artnet reports. Escobar was often associated with the growing Pop art movement in 1960s New York, but maintained a strong interest in pre-Columbian artefacts which informed much of her sculptural work in terracotta and wood. Though she was a student of abstract expressionist Hans Hofmann and a close friend of Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Escobar’s work remains slightly apart from the mainstream movements to which they are often connected to.

Escobar’s last retrospective (and first solo show in New York) took place at Museo del Barrio in 2014.
