Paulina Pukyte has been announced as the curator of the 11th edition of the Kaunas Biennial, to take place in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas from 15 September to 30 November 2017. Based between London and Vilnius, Pukyte is an artist, writer, essayist and cultural commentator.
Under the title There and Not Here. Questioning the Possibility of a Monument, this edition will interrogate the long-running, populist tradition of removing and erecting monuments following political regimes, as well as the conservationism which has defined the realm of public art in Lithuania over the past century. Addressing the construction of memory discourse, the biennial will look to ‘stimulate and legitimise radically new, contemporary, conceptual, relevant ideas and strategies for remembrance, inviting international and local artists to look back at the removed, rethink the existing and imagine the future monuments’.
