On 3 January, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo announced they awarded British-Lebanese artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan the 2022 Future Field Commission in Time-Based Media, which comes with a cash prize of USD 125,000 that is expected to go towards funding the work. Abu Hamdan’s commission will be shown at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and an exhibition of this work will run concurrently at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. His multimedia installation, which takes as its focus the interpretation of testimonies and witnesses, is provisionally titled How to Hear Impossible Speech: Lessons from the Division of Perceptual Studies. Abu Hamdan, one of the joint winners of last year’s Turner Prize, is the first non-American artist to be awarded the Future Fields Commission, former winners of which include Rachel Rose and Martine Syms.
