Michael Simpson wins 2016 John Moores Painting Prize

The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool has announced Michael Simpson as the winner of the 2016 edition of the John Moores Painting Prize for his painting Squint (19) (2015). He will receive a £25,000-cash prize and his painting will be included in the John Moores Painting Prize 2016 exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery (9 July – 27 November) during Liverpool Biennial 2016 alongside 54 other shortlisted works.

Established in 1957, the John Moores prize supports contemporary British painters; previous laureates include David Hockney (1967), Mary Martin (1969), Peter Doig (1993), Keith Coventry (2010) and Sarah Pickstone (2012).
