In another unfortunate setback since Egyptian authorities closed down the space in 2015, Townhouse Gallery in Cairo partially collapsed on 6 April, destroying the Townhouse Library, administrative offices and the first floor gallery extension, The Art Newspaper reports. Cairo Hacker Space, an open source community workspace neighbouring the gallery was completely destroyed by the collapse. Whilst in discussion with engineers over securing and saving the rest of the building, the staff have moved into the gallery’s Factory Space temporarily. The gallery has been facing growing issues including the closure of Townhouse West in satellite city New Cairo because of a withdrawal of funding. Despite this, the gallery’s Rawabet Theatre will reopen on 16 April with a full schedule of performances.
