Cape Town-born artist Kemang Wa Lehulere has been named Deutsche Bank’s 2017 Artist of the Year. Awarded annually on the recommendation of an advisory council (comprising of curators Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Victoria Noorthoorn), the award goes to a contemporary artist whose work is deemed artistically, as well as socially relevant, and working with paper and photography. Previous winners include Yto Barrada, Roman Ondák, Imran Qureshi, Victor Man, Koki Tanaka, and most recently Basim Magdy.
In spring of 2017, Wa Lehulere will hold a solo exhibition at the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin.
