American artist Jamal Cyrus has been selected to present the next BMW Art Journey. Chosen from a shortlist of three artists who presented works at last year’s Art Basel Miami, Cyrus plans to travel to Accra, Paris, London, Granada and New Orleans in order to interview artists, musicians, historians and philosophers who ‘engage the creative traditions of the Afro-Atlantic.’ The journey will be documented via print publications, online and social media.
The jury voting for the recipient of the BWM Art Journey included Massimiliano Gioni (artistic director, New Museum, NY); Gabi Ngcobo (curator for Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art, Berlin); Victoria Noorthoorn (director, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires); Philip Tinari (director, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing) and Susanne Pfeffer (director, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt).
Of his proposal, Cyrus has said in a statement: ‘The journey promises to be a transformational process involving travel, dialogue, collective imagination and intuitive response that will allow new ideas to surface in my work’.
BMW Art Journey will select the next artist for the award during Art Basel in Hong Kong. The recipient will be announced early this summer.
