This year’s edition of the Busan Biennale will be titled Divided We Stand and address the themes of ‘split territories’ around the world, its organisers have announced. Helmed by artistic director Cristina Ricupero and chief curator Jörg Heiser, the biennale considers ‘documentary or fictional responses’ to the social and psychological division of societies, according to a press release, in a ‘belligerent’ global atmosphere fostered by political populism and amplified by social media.
Featuring around 60 artists, and spanning two venues devoted to science fiction and the legacy of the Cold War, the biennale takes place in the city of Busan from 8 September to 11 November.
