Nicolas Bourriaud will curate the 2019 Istanbul biennial. The French curator and theorist, best known for his 1998 book Relational Aesthetics, cofounded the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and is the current director of the Montpellier Contemporain. From 2011 to 2015 he was director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 2014 he curated the Taipei Biennial. Bourriaud said of his appointment ‘As a crossing point, the city of Istanbul takes a specific signification today, in a global political era marked by binary thought. I will try to build an exhibition that measures up to our historical situation.’
The sixteenth edition of the biennial is organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by Koç Holding, taking place between 14 September and 10 November 2019.
