Rolling news: 5–11 October

It was announced on Monday that Tim Marlow was stepping down as artistic director of London’s Royal Academy of Arts in order to take up the role of director of London’s Design Museum. The critic and broadcaster, who joined the Royal Academy after heading exhibitions at White Cube since 2003, will join the Design Museum in January 2020.

The Art Newspaper reported that an exhibition of young feminist artists in Shanghai was cancelled without notice at the end of September. Citing a participating artist, the website reported that the show – titled We | Woman: One is not born a woman, but rather becomes one  – was cancelled a day prior to its opening because of sensitivities relating to China’s National Day, which falls on 1 October. 

Three members of the board of Desert X resigned on Tuesday after the Southern Californian exhibition announced a partnership wth Saudi Arabia. The decision to launch the sculpture biennial in Al-Ula next year led Ed Ruscha, Yael Lipschutz and Tristan Milanovich to step down in protest. Cultural organisations’ relationship with Saudi Arabia have been under scrutiny since the assassination of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. 

The painter Matthew Wong died by suicide. He was thirty-five years old. The Canada-based artist’s delicate, impressionistic paintings had gained admirers including Matthew Higgs, who included him in a 2016 group show. A solo exhibition at Karma, New York, is scheduled to open on 8 November.  

Paris-based artist Bertille Bak has been announced as the winner of the third Mario Merz Prize, among a shortlist including including Mircea Cantor, David Maljković, Maria Papadimitriou and Unknown Friend. She will receive a solo show at Fondazione Merz in Turin in 2020.
