Pace is to launch a permanent digital platform from which to sell artist-made NFTs and stage exhibitions of NFT-linked works. Overseen by Christiana Ine-Kimba Boyle, who was recently appointed the gallery’s first online sales director, the initiative will kick off in September with a solo exhibition of artist Lucas Samaras’s digital prints.
The gallery will also accept payment in crypocurrency going forward. ‘I’m a crypto person,’ gallery president Marc Glimcher told Bloomberg News. ‘I’ve had crypto for a while. It’s really painless to accept crypto. It’s just: Why would you not?’
In April the gallery partnered with Fair Warning, an auction app founded by former Christie’s specialist Loïc Gouzer, to sell a NFT work by Urs Fischer. CHAOS #1 Human, an animation based on a 3D-scan of a lighter circling an egg, raised $97,700. Fischer sold through Pace and Fair Warning after Gagosian, the Swiss artist’s longterm representative, said it was too early to get into the NFT market. Larry Gagosian told the Wall Street Journal that he needed more time to explore the concept.
