The Pergamon Museum in Berlin will close from October for renovation work due to structural damage. According to Deutsche Welle, parts of the building are ‘in a very poor structural condition, which affects the stability of the building and the safety of the exhibits’. Moisture penetration, longstanding war damage as well as outdated technical systems also require extensive restoration.
The Stripe-Classicism-styled Pergamon Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island was built from 1910 to 1930 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The museum currently hosts the famous Pergamon Altar, a monumental Greek construction excavated in 1886 in Pergamon, modern-day Turkey, and the Ishtar Gate of Babylon from modern-day Iraq, among other cultural artefacts. The Pergamon Altar will be displayed again in 2027, while the rest of the museum will not open until 2037.
