Tal R & Mamma Andersson: Svanesang, at Bo Bjerggaard, through 22 October
For their first collaboration, Swedish artist Mamma Andersson and Israeli-born, Copenhagen-based Tal R are presenting new paintings and works on paper, borne out of a year of correspondence during which they exchanged photographs and other materials. To mark this exchange, the show unfolds in two parts, the first at Bo Bjerggaard in the meatpacking district in Copenhagen, and the second, opening 30 August, at Galleri Magnus Karlsson in Stockholm.
Evren Tekinoktay: Bermuda, at David Risley Gallery, through 1 October
Over in north Nørrebro Danish artist Evren Tekinoktay is having her first solo show show at David Risley’s new space. Titled Bermuda, the show draws on the artist’s longtime fascination with the Bermuda Triangle and its unexplained disappearances, and includes a new series of handcrafted, motorised neon-relief works, as well as sculpted masks, and quilted, embroidered textiles.
Liu Xiadong: Painting as Shooting, at Faurschou Foundation, through 16 December
The final chapter in a three venue exhibition by the Chinese painter (which started at the Fondatzione Cini for the 2015 Venice Biennale and went on to Faurschou’s Beijing space), Painting as Shooting is survey show of work fro the last ten years which focuses on projects developed from the artist’s travels across the world, including China, Asia, Cuba, Europe and Israel. Works cover global, cultural and economic subjects, most notably Liu’s Hot Bed series, which portrays migrants within Asia, both in his homeland China and in Thailand, and which he has updated to include European migration issues.
Poul Gernes, I cannot do it alone – want to join in? at Louisiana Art Museum, through 16 October
Meanwhile, Louisiana is presenting a retrospective of influential postwar Danish artscene, painter, sculptor and filmmaker Poul Gernes (1925–96). The cofounder of the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen in the 1960s, Gernes became known for promoting a socially conscious art, seeking to bridge art and life through colour and design. His innovative stance led him to work on the decoration of more than 150 buildings in Denmark, including the Herlev Hospital. He also staged a number of events and exhibitions including, in 1969, the installation of public baths in Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, for the visitors to use.
Meriç Algün Ringborg: Transboundary at ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Aarhus, through 11 September
Born in Turkey and a Swedish citizen since 2012, Meriç Algün Ringborg has developed her practice around questions relating to concepts of belonging and identity. For her solo show at ARoS in Aarhus – Denmark’s second biggest city – Ringborg presents a number of installations exploring these issues, including Promotion Europe, a new work made of 170 EU souvenirs, addressing European identity and the boundaries that affect us physically and culturally.
