Artists Relief survey finds 60 percent of US art workers unemployed during crisis… Howardena Pindell sues former gallery
Artist Relief, a group of arts organisations working together to support artists through the COVID-19 pandemic, has released data that reveals more than 60 percent of art workers in the US have become unemployed due to the pandemic. The COVID-19 Impact Survey for Artists and Creative Workers gathered responses from more than 12,000 artists. The survey also revealed that over 90 percent have experienced some loss of income from their creative practice during the crisis.
American artist Howardena Pindell is suing the owners of G.R. N’Namdi Gallery in a suit alleging that the gallery, which used to represent her, provided misinformation about the sales of her works, defaulted or delayed payments. Collector Arthur Primas is also named in the suit. Pindell is seeking the return of three works from Primas in addition to financial compensation for damages.
Prospect New Orleans has postponed the opening of its fifth edition, Yesterday we said tomorrow. The exhibition will now open on 23 October, 2021, running for a year until 23 January, 2022. Organisers made the decision to align with New Orleans’ efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, and in accordance with social-distancing measures nationwide.
Work on the Sherborne Paddock Project, a £4m art gallery in Dorset, has been halted as a result of the global health crisis. Initial plans for the project included three gallery spaces, a cafe and a tourist information centre, however, a statement posted on the official website said, ‘Whatever any revised project might look like, it will not be on the same scale as the current design.’
The Fondation Beyeler in Basel will open from 11 May, resuming its regular hours again. Edward Hopper’s exhibition and the group show Silent Vision – Images of Calm and Quiet, both of which had been open prior to the temporary closure will be extend until 26 July. A new date for a postponed Goya exhibition will be announced in June.
