Spike Island appoints new director

Nicole Yip has been appointed Director of Spike Island, Bristol. Yip succeeds Robert Leckie, who recently took up a new Director position at Gasworks, London.

The Canadian curator and writer is currently Chief Curator of Exhibitions & Live Programmes at Nottingham Contemporary. Before joining Nottingham Contemporary in 2019, Yip was Director of LUX Scotland, and previously held curatorial positions at LUX, London; Firstsite, Colchester; and ICA, London. Yip has also written for publications including frieze, CURA and Yale University Press, among others. She is a trustee of Film London and chair of Film London’s Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN).

‘I have long admired Spike Island as an institution that places artists and their needs at the heart of everything it does,’ Yip said in a statement. ‘This is an ethos that I will hold close as we embark on its next chapter. I look forward to working with the team and board to build on the fantastic achievements of former director Robert Leckie, and getting to know the vibrant community that makes Spike Island so special.’

Yip will take up her new position at Spike Island in June 2024.
