Scherung Stiftung and KW Institute have announced Sung Tieu as the winner of the 2024 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research.
The German-Vietnamese artist based in Berlin will receive a 15,000€ prize and a solo exhibition at KW. Previous winners of the biennial award include Anna Daučíková (2018), Hiwa K (2016), Kate Cooper (2014) and Wael Shawky (2011).
Writing in ArtReview Summer 2024, Cassie Packard described how ‘Tieu’s approach to telling stories about fracking is not explicitly oriented towards the future, but rather towards making this far-reaching phenomenon – and its strategic obfuscation and lack of meaningful regulation – more clearly perceptible to viewers, which is perhaps a first step towards taking action so there can be a liveable future.’
In a statement announcing the award, the Jury said: ‘In these socio-politically challenging times, we consider it particularly important to honor an artistic position that deals with and critically discusses Germany’s complex history. By presenting Sung Tieu with the 2024 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research, we aim to celebrate her artistic endeavors to reflect on overlooked narratives, provide her with the opportunity to present her body of work in a large survey exhibition, and encourage future research by commissioning new work and a publication.’
Tieu was selected by a jury including Defne Ayas (Curator, Berlin), Emma Enderby (designated Director, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin), Charlotte Klonk (Professor of Art and New Media, Humboldt University Berlin; member of the Foundation Council of Schering Stiftung, Berlin), Jenny Schlenzka (Director, Gropius Bau, Berlin), and Helena Uambembe (Artist, DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program fellow 2023, Berlin).
