Tarek Atoui will create the next Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, the gallery has announced.

Born in Beirut and based in Paris, Tarek Atoui creates multisensory performances using custom-built instruments and drawing on music history and production. His work often incorporates organic elements such as glass, water and ceramics activated by breath, touch and motors. He has exhibited at numerous major institutions and international exhibitions including Pirelli Hangar Bicocca, Milan (2025); TBA 21, Madrid (2025); Kunsthaus Bregenz (2024); MUDAM, Luxembourg (2022); 17th Istanbul Biennial (2022); 13th Gwangju Biennial (2021); 58th Venice Biennale (2019) and Documenta 13, Kassel (2012).

‘Tarek Atoui has captivated audiences internationally with his boundary-pushing approach to sound,’ said Catherine Wood, interim director of Tate Modern, in a statement.

‘Blending music, technology, sculpture and performance, he is a truly cross-disciplinary artist whose work references current social, historical and political realities. Architectural space plays an important role in Atoui’s ongoing investigation into sound and vibration, and we can’t wait to see how he engages with audiences within the public space of Tate Modern’s iconic Turbine Hall.’

Atoui’s Turbine Hall commission will be on view 13 October 2026 through 11 April 2027.
