The Swiss Institute in New York will move to a new address, purchasing premises at 250 Bowery.

The non-profit institution has engaged architecture firm Johnston Marklee for a refurbishment of the 1,020 sqm space, with the new gallery opening in Spring 2027. The firm has a track record with arts organisations, recently commissioned by the like of MCA Chicago, The Menil Drawing Institute and Kunstmuseum Basel.

Established in 1986 by a group of Swiss expats at West 67th St, the Swiss Institute has been at its current rented East Village location since 2018.

The current space at St Marks Place will be vacated after the current exhibitions by SoiL Thornton and Jiajia Zhang close 7 July and the new headquarters will open with a group exhibition titled The Environment, which will draw inspiration from an artist-led, community-created project that unfolded in downtown New York between 1966-68. In the meantime the gallery will stage off-site projects.
