
Valerie Hillings has been appointed as inaugural director of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, set to open in December this year, the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism has announced.
Hillings has been closely involved with the project during its development, serving as the Guggenheim Foundation’s curator and associate director of curatorial affairs for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi from 2009 to 2018, working on collection strategy and acquisitions and on pre-opening programming. Since 2018, she has served as director of the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh.
‘I look forward to welcoming local and global audiences to the magnificent Frank Gehry-designed building and inviting them to explore points of interconnection and unique stories through the lens of art from the 1960s to our time’, said Hilling in a statement.
