Wulf Herzogenrath, a champion of video art and the director of Kunsthalle Bremen for seventeen years, has died.
The curator was a long champion of video and new media art, as well as the Bauhaus. In 1976 Herzogenrath organised the first European solo show for Nam June Paik at the Kölnischer Kunstverein. The following year he established a section dedicated to video art at Documenta 6, returning to quinquennial’s curatorial committee in 1987, this time with an exhibition dedicated to new technology in art.
In 1979 Herzogenrath curated Ex Machina? Frühe Computergrafik at Kunsthalle Bremen, returning the gallery as director in 1994 until his retirement in 2011.
Previously, from 1973 to 1989, he was director of the Cologne Art Association, and from 1989 to 1994, chief curator of the Nationalgalerie Berlin, he oversaw the concept for the Museums für Gegenwart at the Hamburger Bahnhof.
